Trial And Error

Here is another early run, with us testing different strategies for running ahead to get a 'larger gap' of cars to allow us more time in a set. As you can see in Easy Living not all of our ideas worked out very well. :) In this clip we test our timing again trying to reach the Holo-Girl. We also take a quick trip down the cave and look behind 'the Grove' and 'the Kitchen'.

  1. That's amazing. I still can't believe that they had no security whatsoever on the ride. Do later Disney rides have cameras or anything? I thought I saw some on Dinosaur in AK, but it was so long ago (a few years after it opened).

  4. Sarah, yes, I believe most Disney attractions these days have some sort of security system if there is any chance of a guest getting out of the vehicle.

Even rides older than Horizons have security systems, Haunted Mansion has instrusion mats, If You Had Wings had instrusion mats, etc...

Horizons was indeed a rare gem, and I still just cannot comprehend the idea of them literally tearing it to the ground. :(

  5. Can you bundle your vids, pics, and text into a torrent file in case the Mouse finds a way to shut you down?

  6. The mouse will not find a way to shut this down, lest I go burn Mission:Space into a pile of guest-killing ashes.

  7. These videos are absolutely amazing, and probably the last and greatest footage there is of Horizons. I can't wait to see the rest.

I know Horizons means and meant a great deal for you two, but for some of us who are even younger - in our 30s, we were there in 83,84 as small kids and I think the wonder and promise of Horizons made an indelible mark on our minds and our hearts at such a young age.

It is so surreal watching you guys run around while the kitchen - lalala music is playing in the background.

This is just awesome, Thank You Hoot and Thank You CHIEF.

  9. On a side note, don't know if this has been answered/asked yet.. did you guys ever try this, even just once, at any other attraction? I would imagine WoM would be pretty tempting.

  10. Thanks back to YOU, Horizons fans. This blog is for you as I said before.

To answer a few questions from Kyle, if the mouse trys to shut this down you'll get one HELL of a torrent file. Just search for "Hoot and Chief Horizons".

Enjoy this material, friends! It's for you!

Did we try this in any other other Disney attraction? Well.......Chief and I WERE prone to periods of boredom and needed adventure:)

  14. Things have probably changed post 9/11, but back in the day, there were very few security or monitoring systems in EPCOT.

At Energy, Cast Members were stationed in the theaters and one followed behind the vehicles in the Diorama (which, due to its curvature, offered a view of only the last two vehicles once they broke into single-file formation); still, if the CM was doing their job, they'd have encountered you at some point. Energy is now monitored with CCTV.

Horizons, World of Motion, and Imagination had no sensors or monitoring. Seas had intrusion mats (like the Haunted Mansion). Spaceship eventually got infrared (serves the same function as intrusion mats, but better suited to the uneven "terrain").

Basically they implemented these measures only when the saw a significant and REPEATED risk of guests climbing out of ride vehicles. I once worked a "utility" position in the original Imag, positioned in a couple of different points to watch guests and count the number of potential jumpers. They were doing a feasibility study to determine if intrusion sensors were warranted.

Spaceship had by far the highest number of jumpers and reportedly many very serious injuries, but it still took them quite some time to finally install the infrared.

  15. I know the guys have already made the obligatory "Don't Try This At Home" post, but just to put a finer point on it: I knew Imag very well. I'd walked the track, I knew how the Turntable worked, etc; I knew what to expect in the ride. Yet when I worked that utility position, my mind drifted for just a moment and I put myself in a position where, if I hadn't come to my senses just in the nick of time, I would have had both of my legs COMPLETELY SEVERED OFF. You're dealing with very heavy machinery, and you don't know what you may run into.

That said, I must admit, I'm glad to have all these wonderful photos and video, and to be able to experience this adventure vicariously!
